Dancers demonstrate faith through movement

Corps Bara troupe celebrates 10 years

Ten years ago, Karen Sudds had a dream of building a community of dance professionals who would integrate their art form with their faith.

Corps Bara Dance Theatre became that reality and the dance group is now recognized for its unique ability to create work that explores life from a Christian world view.

On its website, the dance company says its mission is to explore the human story and our search for spiritual connection. It does that through small pieces designed for church services to full-length theatrical performances. The company has been able to bridge the Christian community with the arts community.

The origin of the dance group’s name is interesting. Corps is Latin for body, said Sudds, executive director of the dance group, and Bara is Hebrew for “I create,” as in Genesis I in scripture.

“Actually the name came from one of the other ladies that was working with the company at that time,” said Sudds. “She was doing a Bible study and found the word Bara and . . . corps in dance is used a lot. She actually put the two words together.”

Sudds describes Corps Bara as a contemporary dance company. It is one company with two initiatives — a youth company, which is a developmental and mentoring company; and a project company, which is its semi-professional company.

“We call it project because it’s dependent on funding from project to project,” said Sudds.

“When I started 25 years ago, there really wasn’t a lot of dance in the church. So the company really started as a way of bridging the arts, particularly dance, back into the church. And of course, that was a very slow process. As we grew, it was always in my mind anyway with the company that wasn’t its sole purpose. It was one of its purposes.”

She said that expressing faith through an art form is meant to enrich all of society.

“So the drive was always to move the faith-based, inspired arts into the regular arts community in Calgary and to be part of that so that we would have a voice and a presence in the city,” said Sudds.

Corps Bara is holding a 10th anniversary benefit concert Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. at First Alliance Church. For more information about the event and for tickets call 403-2544321 or visit www.corpsbara.com. Tickets for the special anniversary performance and gala are $20. Doors open at 6:15 p.m.

The dance company also performs tonight at St. Mary’s Cathedral in a Concert for Peace that brings together a number of Calgary’s best performing arts organizations to honour Canadians who have served their country through the military.

Admission is free to the concert, which begins at 8 p.m. However, donations will be accepted with all proceeds going to the Captain Nichola K.S. Goddard Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Nichola Goddard Light Up Papua New Guinea project.

The dance group has 17 dancers in the youth company and seven in the project company. The youth company ranges in age from 10 to 18 and the project company has semi-professional and professional dancers in their 20s and 30s.

The dance group performs in numerous venues, including churches of all different denominations, primarily with the youth company.

The project company performs mainly in theatres.

“We’re going back — because this is our (10th) anniversary year — to really looking at our roots, which have their genesis in the early 20th century modern dance,” said Sudds.

It was to create sanctuary in the theatre “and that’s what we try to do,” she said.

“Oftentimes our theme might be something like just community, relationships. One time we actually tackled the history of the church. That was an interesting one.”

Concepts of reconciliation, forgiveness, liturgy, etc. are also themes for the dance group.

Project Dance Toronto – by Angie

My dancing friend Angie has sent this report on Project Dance in Toronto!

Toronto

This past month, Corps Bara went to Toronto for Project Dance, It was the first time that Project Dance was presented in Canada! I was super excited for lots of reasons. First of all for the fact that on the Saturday, we were going to dance outside in downtown for complete strangers- this was awesome. Also that it was my first time on an airplane, and a great experience with my best friends that we would all have in learning more about dance and broadening our list of cool experiences with dance.

When we arrived in Toronto, (Thursday) anyone who had never been there before was pretty amazed at how big it was compared to Calgary. And our hotel was right in the heart of downtown Toronto, so we were right at the center of excitement! But we also had to walk- A LOT! So everyone’s feet were dead at the end of each day due to dance and walking.

On Friday afternoon all Project Dance participants registered in our hotel for the weekend. At 3:00 that afternoon everyone learned a combo that we were going to all just break out into at the top of every hour on Saturday wherever we were to try and draw crowds from the streets to see our show. Then that evening we had an amazing worship time from a great band, as well as listening to interviews from different company directors and dancers involved in project dance. Also some awesome dance companies performed that evening. It was just a great night of dance and worship.

On Saturday everyone was super pumped for the outdoor dance concert all day. However, we awoke to lightning and thunderstorms and a torrential downpour. We were all really worried that the day would be cancelled. But we forgot that Toronto’s climate is way different than Calgary’s. Because in Calgary, thunderstorms mean cold weather, but in Toronto, it means humidity and heat afterwards. And all fears were diminished once we stepped outside our hotel. We all got up bright and early and walked quite a ways (it seemed quite a ways with dance/garment bags) to Metro Hall Square where the stage was set up. The show started off at noon with the group combo, as we were trying to draw a crowd in because at that point, only dancers and families were there. But as the day went on, more people slowly came and went. Also the weather got really humid and hot, so were exhausted by the end of the day. But  at about 3:00 pm, the city wanted to shut down the building where we were getting all of our power from, so everyone was pretty worried that all of our hard work would be wasted, but fortunately, somebody crawled under the ground and got us our power back! And at the end of the day, everyone’s dances looked great, and hopefully people were touched by what they saw.

Sunday was a fantastic day because we all walked to the National Ballet studios and took classes there. The classes were amazing! I took Jazz, Musical theatre, Lyrical Jazz and Liquid Street. Jazz was a really great way to start the day off, then musical theatre was really fun, and we learned some of the Fosse style, but the next day my abs were killing. Lyrical Jazz was probably my favourite class because the combo that we learned was really contemporary. Then in the Liquid street class we took yoga poses and incorporated them into strengthening. We also learned some liquid dance basics like the arm wave and the leg wave, which are actually really hard, so I have a new appreciation for liquid dance.

Then on Monday everyone really relaxed and went sightseeing or shopping around Toronto, and I went on the Subway for the first time as well! But I was so glad to come home after the long weekend and see the rest of my family, and to relax for a few days. Now I can’t wait until the next time we go to Project Dance!
